As organised criminal gangs continue to target jewellers, luxury watch boutiques and other high-value retailers with increasing sophistication, physical security is evolving far beyond traditional shutters, alarms and CCTV. For many businesses protecting valuable stock, the greatest vulnerability now lies at the very first point of entry.
Birmingham-based security specialist Warrior Doors believes interlocking door systems are becoming one of the most effective methods of preventing opportunist theft, criminal tailgating and armed robbery before offenders ever gain access to a showroom.
Unlike conventional entrances, an interlocking door system – sometimes referred to as an airlock or mantrap – creates a controlled transition space between the street and the retail environment. Customers pass through an external security door into a secure lobby before being granted access through a second independently controlled door into the store itself. At no point can both doors be opened simultaneously.
The result is a layered security process that gives retail staff significantly greater control over who enters their premises, while maintaining a welcoming experience for genuine customers.
For luxury retailers, where individual watches, jewellery and precious gemstones can each be worth tens or even hundreds of thousands of pounds, the additional seconds provided by an interlocking entrance can make the difference between preventing a robbery and becoming another victim of organised crime.
Warrior Doors Managing Director Brett Barratt says the philosophy behind interlocking entrances is simple: prevent threats from ever reaching the showroom.
“Security is always strongest at the perimeter,” he explained. “Once criminals gain access to the retail floor, every second counts. An interlocking door system allows staff to assess visitors before they enter, significantly reducing opportunities for tailgating, distraction thefts or coordinated armed robberies.”
Unlike manually operated entrances, Warrior Doors’ interlocking systems remain entirely under staff control. Customers can only enter when authorised via secure access controls, whether through a discreet release button or integrated fob system. The dual-door configuration also enables retailers to assess visitors twice — initially using external CCTV coverage while they remain outside the premises, and again once they enter the secure lobby before access to the showroom is granted.
Barratt believes this layered approach reflects the way physical security is increasingly being designed around behavioural risk rather than simply resisting forced entry.
“Modern criminals are extremely organised,” he said. “Many offences involve multiple individuals working together, whether that’s someone tailgating behind a legitimate customer or creating distractions while others enter. Interlocking doors give retailers time to identify suspicious behaviour before anyone reaches valuable stock.”
The systems can be configured using either sliding or swing security doors, with sliding doors proving particularly popular in premium retail environments where maximising showroom space is important. Because sliding doors require no swing clearance, retailers can incorporate a narrower security lobby without compromising customer flow or accessibility.
Every Warrior Doors installation is manufactured to each client’s individual requirements, allowing the entrance to complement the architectural style of luxury boutiques, heritage buildings or flagship retail stores. Powder-coated finishes are available in virtually any RAL colour alongside polished stainless-steel options, ensuring security enhances rather than dominates the customer experience.
“Our customers invest heavily in creating premium retail environments,” said Barratt. “Security should reinforce that experience, not detract from it. Every interlocking entrance is designed specifically for the building, allowing us to combine exceptional protection with the appearance customers expect from luxury retail.”
Behind the aesthetics lies engineering designed to withstand determined attack. Warrior Doors manufactures its systems using premium-grade stainless steel for long-term durability and corrosion resistance, while incorporating independently certified high-security glazing and locking systems.
Key components of the interlocking system have been independently tested and certified by LPCB to LPS 1175 Security Rating 4 (SR4), with approved elements also recognised through the Secured by Design police initiative. These certifications provide independent verification that the systems have been rigorously assessed against recognised physical attack standards.
As organised criminal activity continues to evolve, Barratt believes retailers are increasingly recognising that physical security should not simply delay offenders, but prevent them from gaining access altogether.
“Luxury retailers work incredibly hard to build trusted brands and exceptional customer experiences,” he said. “Protecting those businesses starts at the entrance. An interlocking door system provides retailers with control, confidence and valuable time — all of which are essential when safeguarding people, premises and high-value stock.”
With retail crime becoming increasingly targeted and professional, the industry’s approach to entrance security is changing. For jewellers, luxury boutiques and specialist retailers, the front door is no longer simply an entrance; it is rapidly becoming one of the most important components of their overall security strategy.
