Repeat Break Ins:
What This Bike Shop’s Security Missed

15 MAY 2025

A high-street bike shop in Stockton-on-Tees has become the latest victim of a violent ram raid, marking its second burglary in eight months. In the early hours of 12 April 2025, criminals used a vehicle to smash through the shuttered entrance of Skinnergate Cycles, making off with two electric bikes—one of which remains missing.

Despite upgraded security following a previous break-in in August 2024, the thieves once again breached the premises, causing extensive damage. CCTV shows the forceful impact as the shop’s shutter crumples under vehicular pressure—an all-too-common tactic in today’s organised retail crimes.

Don’t Just Rely on Insurance — Strengthen Your Protection
Whilst many assume insurance will cover the losses, Skinnergate Cycles now faces thousands in uncovered costs. After the first burglary, their insurance excess rose from £500 to £5,000—and their premiums increased by another £2,000. Faced with even higher quotes from alternative insurers, the owners have been forced to absorb the full cost of the most recent incident.

“Popular comments are ‘never mind, the shop has insurance’—but we don’t, not really,” says the owner. “Our excess is now £5,000, and there are other damages not covered at all.”

This real-world example highlights the urgent need for physical protection—not just paperwork.

Other high-profile raids reinforce the trend:

  • Sophisticated burglars dodged sensors at The Gorilla Firm in Northampton
