As organised criminal gangs become increasingly sophisticated in their approach to targeting luxury retailers, security experts are warning that the traditional concept of a shopfront is no longer enough to protect staff, customers and high-value stock.
For Birmingham-based Warrior Doors, demand is growing for one particular solution: the interlocking door system.
Sometimes referred to as an airlock or mantrap, an interlocking entrance creates a secure lobby between the street and the showroom, allowing only one door to open at any time. The system gives retail staff the opportunity to assess visitors before granting access, significantly reducing the risk of tailgating, distraction thefts and armed robbery.
Managing Director Brett Barratt believes the technology has become one of the most effective physical security measures available to luxury retailers.
“Organised criminal groups are continually adapting their tactics. Interlocking doors fundamentally change the way a retailer controls access to its premises. Rather than reacting once offenders are inside, they prevent criminals from gaining unrestricted access in the first place. That additional layer of control protects not only valuable stock but, more importantly, the people working inside.”
The effectiveness of the approach has already been demonstrated in some of the UK’s highest-profile luxury retail locations.
Luxury jeweller Boodles installed Warrior Doors’ bespoke interlocking security system at the rear of its Knightsbridge showroom following a violent smash-and-grab robbery. Months later, the premises were targeted again when offenders attempted to ram the entrance using a 2.2-tonne Land Rover Discovery. The interlocking security entrance successfully prevented access.
Following that success, Boodles commissioned Warrior Doors to design a fully glazed sliding interlocking entrance for the front of its prestigious Sloane Street boutique, combining uncompromising security with the elegant appearance expected within one of London’s most exclusive retail destinations.
At the time, Boodles Managing Director Michael Wainwright described the installation as transformational.
“The Airlock door in Sloane Street is a huge success and as well as making the shop far more secure, it enhances the luxurious ambience of the boutique. The fortified shopfronts have given us total reassurance that our stock – and more importantly our staff – are now far safer than ever before.”
For Warrior Doors, that project demonstrated that physical security no longer needs to compromise architectural design or the customer experience.
Each interlocking system is manufactured from premium-grade stainless steel and built entirely to the customer’s specification, with options including fully glazed sliding doors, swing doors or hybrid configurations. Available in polished stainless steel or bespoke RAL finishes, the systems can be integrated seamlessly into contemporary boutiques or sympathetic heritage buildings alike.
Barratt says this balance between aesthetics and protection is becoming increasingly important as luxury retailers invest heavily in creating premium shopping environments.
“Customers expect beautiful, welcoming retail spaces. Our role is to ensure that security enhances that experience rather than dominating it. Advances in engineering now allow us to create entrances that are visually stunning while delivering independently tested levels of physical protection.”
The company’s systems incorporate independently certified high-security glazing, specialist locking systems and components tested by BRE to LPS 1175 security standards, with Secured by Design approved elements available throughout the system.
Unlike conventional automatic entrances, the interlocking system remains under the complete control of retail staff. Customers are admitted individually through discreet access controls, while CCTV allows employees to assess visitors before either door is released.
Barratt believes that, as attacks on luxury retailers continue to evolve, secure access control will become a defining feature of premium retail design.
“Retailers have invested significantly in protecting display cabinets, safes and shopfront glazing. Increasingly, they’re recognising that controlling who enters the building is equally important. Interlocking doors provide that control without compromising the luxury environment that premium brands work so hard to create.”
With more luxury retailers prioritising both employee safety and customer experience, Warrior Doors believes the interlocking entrance is rapidly becoming the benchmark for secure access in high-value retail—providing reassurance that begins long before customers reach the showroom floor.
